"Is it Safe to Get a Tattoo While on Your Period?"
I know it sounds crazy but various studies have demonstrated that the menstrual cycle can alter pain perception as estrogen may influence somatic sensory processes.
In a study consisting of 20 women volunteers with chronic low pain, they were asked to rate their pain every day during three menstrual cycles. The cycle was divided into four and five phases to efficiently compare results.
The analysis reported that the women rated their pain extraordinarily higher during the premenstrual and menstrual cycles than other phases. The results are consistent with other studies which showed evidence of less pain sensitivity during phases of the menstrual cycle that typically have high estrogen.
SHOULD YOU GET TATTOOED WHILE ON YOUR PERIOD?
Your period won't affect the quality of your tattoo; however, you must consider your pain tolerance. If you have a low pain threshold, you might have a difficult time sitting still while getting tattooed. This could affect the quality of your tattoo.
While your artist is going to do their best to give you a high-quality tattoo, they don't know your pain tolerance or your ability to sit still while in pain. It's your responsibility to plan for this. If possible, avoid scheduling your appointment during your period week if you're sensitive to pain.
MEDICATION WHILE GETTING TATTOOED
Pain medication (i.e., Ibuprofen) and herbal supplements (i.e., ginger, garlic, gingko biloba) possess blood-thinning properties that inhibit blood clotting, resulting in bleeding more during your tattoo. Additionally, alcohol can thin your blood as well.
It is best to avoid drinking the day before your tattoo. While a small amount of medication is usually harmless, it's always best to check with your artist.
TIPS FOR GETTING TATTOOED WHILE ON YOUR PERIOD
Some women are particularly susceptible to skin sensitivity while menstruating. If you are concerned about this, schedule larger tattoo sessions during a time when you're not on your period. Keep in mind that sensitive areas are more prone to period related inflammation, meaning they are likely to be more painful.
Bring extra sanitary products to your appointment and don't be hesitant to ask to use the bathroom. Consider doubling up on your protection before your appointment (e.g., wearing a tampon and a pad) to provide extra protection against leaks.
Talk to your artist about taking medication prior to your tattoo appointment.
Bring plenty of snacks and beverages. Your body burns more calories when menstruating, as well when being tattooed due to the stress.
